維吉尼亞州 （Virginia）

倘若你聽過迪士尼經典動畫「風中奇緣」，那你就已經開啟了認識維吉尼亞州的第一步！做為美國開拓史的故鄉，在十五世紀地理大發現前便早有人煙，Powhatan酋長（風中奇緣女主角寶嘉康蒂的父親）家族，過去曾統領整個維吉尼亞州，然而維吉尼亞早在十六世紀末的1584年就有英國探險家來到此地且，將其納為英國海外第一個殖民據點，命名此州為維吉尼亞用以紀念當時的英國女王伊麗莎白一世（伊莉莎白一世又稱童貞女王）。1607年倫敦的維吉尼亞公司在詹姆斯敦成立，開啟了英國在新大陸殖民史的新頁，此後大批的殖民者與拓荒者開始源源不絕地湧入這個新世界。

維吉尼亞州在美國獨立戰爭時期扮演了極為重要的角色。始自亨利派翠克的「不自由毋寧死」到最後維吉尼亞獨立軍終於在約克敦突圍康沃利斯將軍所率領的部隊。另外在美國南北戰爭時期，許多戰役也都在此地，這些當年的武裝軍事基地或者軍事戰場，如今都成為了重要的國家歷史中心，每年都有眾多的觀光客到此朝聖。是本州獨有的風光景致。

維吉尼亞也是歷代八名美國總統的故鄉，擁有「總統之母」的美稱。

Have you heard of the classic Disney animation “Pocahontas”? If you have, then you have already heard of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia is a state steeped in history. Before the Europeans arrived, Chief Powhatan ruled over the untamed landand was also the father of the well-known historical figure: Pocahontas. The first permanent English settlement in America, at Jamestown in 1607, set the stage for the taming of the wilderness.

Virginia played a central role during the American Revolution, from Patrick Henry's fiery oration "Give me liberty or give me death", to the eventual surrender of Lord Cornwallis to Washington at Yorktown. During the Civil War, more battles took place in Virginia than in any other state in the United States. Many of these battlegrounds are now national historic sites, and are visited by thousands of tourists annually.

Virginia also holds the distinction of being the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents.
